Then, all of a sudden, he catches his first "site" visitor of the day. He quickly advances on his "victim" and takes care of "business" Unfortunately for the catch, he usually doesn't survive the transaction. One more interesting thing about spiders, which can also be applied to the business model, is the way they go about taking care of "excess" customers. They will spin a cocoon around them and save them for a "rainy" day, when there aren't many customers visiting his"site"!
I think the scenario above is very similar to marketing your business online with the internet! You need to have a plan in place to take care of your customers to insure that their visit to your website results in your converting a sale from them. Unlike the spider's "customer", you want them to not only survive the visit, but to have enjoyed it enough to come back for many more visits. This is commonly referred to as "giving the customer value". Maybe they will become lifetime customers if you continue to give them this value on each visit!
Oh, and about the cocoon thing, where they save their "visitor" for a "rainy" day when business is slow, when you "spin" your "website", just install an autoresponder (or e-mail capture) form, and then you can keep in contact with your customer to inform them of special sales promotions, offer coupons, or just to say hello and tell them you appreciate their business.
Hope you enjoyed the spider analogy, and see where you might incorporate this into your online presence. And if you don't already have a website, how are you going to catch any "prey"!....................PRAY??
